How much does sportswear cost?

We get inundated with enquiries every day from entrepreneurs and brands, asking for quotes on garments without providing a design or tech pack. Our response is always the same…… Would you walk into an architect’s studio and ask, “How much for a house”.

It’s the same when you order anything truly bespoke, there is no fixed price and as we don’t sell off the shelf, generic, middle of the range, average sportswear, our prices are all bespoke to the requirements of our clients and their customer’s needs.

For instance, a potential client may ask “How much for a technical Tee shirt?”

Many factors will determine this e.g.

1. How many do you want to order?

2. What is the fabric composition?

3. What is the fabric weight?

4. What is the performance criteria?

5. How is it manufactured?

6. What trims are going to be applied?

Without this information, we quote anywhere between $3 to $30. Oh, and in the past, we have produced technical T-shirts for both of these prices. The $3 Tee was synthetic and produced in huge volume with minimal trim and features and sold in a supermarket. The $30 Tee sold in boutique fashion stores and was made from superfine merino wool and silk with bonded seams and stainless and leather trims. Both Tee shirts have sleeves, a neck, back and front, however, they were targeted at completely different end consumers.

When we work with clients, we discuss the position of the brand in the marketplace, their nearest competitors, the desired performance of the product, features required, quantity and quality of manufacture. We also discuss retail price points and margin expectations so we can determine a cost price for the style. It’s only when we know this can we design and specify fabrics and components that will hit this target price.

At the end of the day, you get what you pay for. If you are sourcing “cheapest”, you will get lower quality, lower performing and fewer features than a product costing twice the cost. You may end up with a product that isn’t ethically produced or have any assurances that the materials used are tested and commercially approved.

Many of our clients have become clients because they were seduced by cheap. Lured in by a low-cost price, they end up with goods that have quality issues or aren’t fit for purpose, which ultimately costs them more in brand damage and product they cannot sell.

If you are starting a brand, then you need to amaze consumers with your product. If you don’t and you produce mediocre, then how will you gain repeat orders or any recommendations from past customers. You will need to spend a fortune on advertising to new customers all of the time in the knowledge they won’t return after their first order and definitely won’t spread the word to their friends and family. It’s far more important to wow customers and let them do your marketing organically by telling the world about your brand than just delivering “Average” and then having to chase new customers.

A brand with a great reputation and a loyal customer base is far more valuable than a brand without.
